Currently at The Hayward, Antony Gormley is exhibiting Blind Light. The work of British sculptor Antony Gormley, his first major London showing,is on exhibition until 19th August 2007.
The exhibition features a series of brand new monumental works specially conceived for The Hayward's distinctive spaces, including one of the largest ever urban public art commissions, Event Horizon, which features sculptural casts of the artist’s body on rooftops and public walkways across central London, dramatically transforming the city skyline.
These new works, including a spectacular series of suspended figures created in light-infused webs of steel, are shown alongside a selection of works from the last three decades. The experience of being lost in the fog of the "steam room" in Blind Light is about orientation, perception and light itself.
But could it be that, for Antony Gormley, these have less importance than the way those who move around in the fog are isolated, invisible to one another until, very suddenly, they loom right into one another's space. Or about the way those outside the room of fog keep seeing those inside appear behind the translucent walls, needing to find themselves or to be found. A central part of the experience is of the obscured closeness we have to one another.
